General description
Brahmi is an annual, creeping herb with succulent stems that root at nodes and produce multiple ascending branches.
The leaves are simple, opposite, exstipulate, and sessile, measuring approximately 1.2–1.8 cm in length. They are spathulate in shape, with a very obtuse tip, entire margins, a glabrous surface, and a somewhat fleshy texture.
The flowers of Brahmi are irregular, bisexual, and pale violet-blue. They grow solitarily in axillary positions on glabrous pedicels, which are significantly longer than the leaves. The plant has linear-lanceolate bractlets and five free, unequal, imbricate sepals, with the outer sepals being longer, oval-oblong, and acute. The five petals are fused to form a faintly two-lipped corolla, nearly 1.2 cm long, with rounded lobes that are nearly equal in size.
Brahmi possesses four stamens situated on the corolla tube, which are didynamous and included within the structure. The anther cells are distinct and functionally perfect. The ovary is superior and two-locular, with numerous ovules in each loculus. The style is simple, and the stigma is typically two-lobed.
The fruit is a two-valved, ovoid capsule that is sharply pointed and enclosed within the calyx.
The seeds are small, numerous, and contain a fleshy endosperm.
Brahmi flowers primarily in December.
