Vasanta Ritu Charya: Ayurveda’s Guide to Spring Wellness


Introduction

Spring is known as Vasanta Ritu in Ayurveda. As nature blossoms and the chill of winter subsides, our bodies also undergo significant changes. To maintain health and vitality during this season, Ayurveda prescribes specific guidelines for diet, lifestyle, and self-care. This seasonal regimen, called Vasanta Ritu Charya, helps to harmonize our internal rhythms with the external environment.


Understanding Vasanta Ritu in Ayurveda


  1. Timeframe: Mid-March to Mid-May  

According to the Hindu Calander- Chaitra and Vaishakha months


  1. Dominant Dosha: Kapha begins to aggravate

During the winter season, Kapha dosha gets accumulated and consolidated due to the cold and heaviness of winter and stays at one place in the body. But with the dawn of warm spring with strong sunrays, Kapha gets melted, moves into other places of the body and aggravates.


  1. Qualities of the Season: The Sun is predominant, have a hot weather with intense sunlight. The wind is dry in nature.



Common Health issues should Concern in Vasantha Ritu


  1. During Vasanta Ritu, Kayagni is believed to diminish (Mandagni), likely due to the aggravation of Kapha (Kapha Prakopa) in the body, which suppresses digestive fire.
  2. During this season, individuals are believed to possess moderate strength (Madhyama Bala).
  3. Because of that transition from winter to spring often leads to an imbalance in Kapha dosha, manifesting such as allergies, congestion, lethargy, and sluggish digestion. Vasanta Ritu Charya provides a framework to counter these effects and promote optimal well-being.


Dietary Guidelines for Vasantha Ritu

Vasantha Ritu calls for a diet that balances Kapha dosha by emphasizing light, dry, and warm foods while reducing heavy, oily, and cold foods. Here are some key dietary recommendations:


Foods to Include- Wholesome Diet


  1. Bitter, Astringent, and Pungent Tastes: These tastes help reduce Kapha. Incorporate foods like spinach, fenugreek, turmeric, ginger, and mustard greens.
  2. Light and Dry Grains: Cereals like Barley, wheat, Sashtika shali (Rice- oryza sativum which is harvested in 60days)), maize (Zea mays), Neevara (Hygroryza aristate), Kodo millet (Paspalum scrobiculate) Pulses like green gram, lentil (Lens culinaris)
  3. Bitter taste Vegetables: Patola (Tricosanthese diocia), Nimba (Azadiracta indica) leaves and Vartaka (Brinjal).
  4. Fruits: Favor light and slightly sour fruits such as apples, pomegranates, and berries.
  5. Spices: Use warming spices like black pepper, cinnamon, and cumin to enhance digestion and reduce Kapha.
  6. Beverages: Sringaverambu (Water prepared by adding ginger), Madhavambu (Water adding honey)
  7. Honey: A natural Kapha pacifier, honey can be used in moderation to sweeten foods and drinks.


Foods to Avoid- Unwholesome diet


  1. Heavy (Guru), oily (Snigdha), and cold (Sheeta) foods like dairy, fried items, and processed foods.
  2. Sweet and sour tastes, as they can aggravate Kapha.
  3. Excessive intake of cold beverages, new grains and curds.


Lifestyle Recommendations

In Vasanta Ritu, adopting an active and stimulating lifestyle is essential to counter Kapha dosha heaviness.


Daily Routine (Dinacharya) at Vasanta Ritu


  1. Wake Early: Rise before sunrise (in Brahma Muhurtha) to harness the season’s invigorating energy.
  2. Physical exercise (Vyayama): Engage in moderate to intense physical activity such as yoga, brisk walking, or jogging to stimulate circulation and reduce Kapha.
  3. Dry Massage (Udvartana): Use herbal powders or dry brushes to stimulate the skin, improve circulation, and reduce excess Kapha.
  4. Sun Exposure: Spend time in the morning sun to counter the coolness of the season.
  5. Nasal Cleansing (Nasya): Administer medicated oils to the nostrils to expel excess Kapha from the head, eyes, ears, nose, and throat to clear congestion and prevent other health issues.
  6. Kajal Application (Anjana): Using collyrium helps alleviate eye strain and refreshes the eyes, counteracting Kapha-induced heaviness.
  7. Gargling (Kavala): Kavala involves holding and swirling warm herbal decoctions like medicinal liquids in the mouth before spitting them out. During Vasanta Ritu, Kavala aids in maintaining oral hygiene, preventing throat infections, and balancing Kapha dosha.
  8. Use of Warm Water: Warm water should be preferred for drinking and cleansing purposes to counteract Kapha dossha heaviness and maintain digestive fire (Agni).
  9. Application of Cooling Pastes: Smearing the body with sandalwood (Santalum album) and Agil (Aquilaria) paste provides a cooling and refreshing effect, preventing excess Kapha accumulation.


Mental and Emotional Health

  1. Practice stimulating pranayama techniques like Kapalabhati and Bhastrika to energize the mind and also give a cleansing effect on the nasal passages and fires up the digestive process.
  2. Engage in creative or outdoor activities to shake off winter lethargy.


Unwholesome Lifestyle

  1. Day Sleep: not advisable. Day sleep during Vasanta Ritu aggravates Kapha, leading to indigestion and sluggish metabolism.


Seasonal Cleansing Practices

Spring is an ideal time for Ayurvedic detoxification to eliminate accumulated toxins (Ama):

  1. Panchakarma- Vamana Karma: Vamana (therapeutic emesis) helps expel excess Kapha.
  2. Fasting: Light fasting or consuming easily digestible meals supports digestion and reduces Kapha.
